I recently had a minor whinge that when publishing a Power BI workspace as an App, it was difficult to tell the difference between the three types of links in the navigation pane on the left.
To set the record straight, I love the functionality of publishing a workspace as an App. Coupled with the not-so-recent addition of Audiences, they are now an excellent way for consumers to interact with a "solution" as opposed to a folder of reports/semantic models/dataflows/etc.
When you publish an app, there are three types of things you can add to the navigation pane.
Reports: the most common, which is the reports you've created in the workspace.
Section: a top-level folder you can add to organistion your reports
Link: a link to another report in a different workspace or an external location.
If you use all of these, it's no so clear which is which when visiting the App.
With this simple trick, you can make it perfectly clear what is a folder, link, or section. You can even get a little creative and add all kinds of emojis, just for design or branding purposes. Use Windows Key + semi-colon to get the little emoji pop-up, and prefix your report names with the relevant one.
Have a look below and see the difference! Easy!
